Sliding friction at a rubber/brush interface.
We study the friction of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) rubber network sliding, at low velocity, on a substrate on which PDMS chains are end-tethered. We thus clearly evidence the contribution to friction of the pullout mechanism of chain ends that penetrate into the network. This interfacial dissipative process is systematically investigated by probing the velocity dependence of the friction ...
متن کاملLocal friction at a sliding interface between an elastomer and a rigid spherical probe.
This paper reports on spatially resolved measurements of the shear stress distribution at a frictional interface between a flat rubber substrate and a glass lens. Silicone rubber specimens marked close to their surface by a colored pattern have been prepared in order to measure the surface displacement field induced by the steady-state friction of the spherical probe. The deconvolution of this ...
متن کاملSliding Objects with Random Friction
We study the motion of elastic networks driven over a random substrate. Our model which includes local friction forces leads to complex dynamical behavior. We find a transition to a sliding state which belongs to a new universality class. The phase diagram comprises of a pinned state, a stick-slip motion phase, and a free motion phase.
متن کاملRigidity sensing by stochastic sliding friction
The sliding friction force exerted by stochastic linkers interacting with a moving filament is calculated. The elastic properties of the substrate on which the linkers are anchored are shown to strongly influence the friction force. In some cases, the force is maximal for a finite substrate rigidity. Collective effects give rise to a dynamical instability resulting in a stick-slip behaviour, wh...
